MOSCOW, June 26 (R-Sport) - Russia’s Krasnye Krylya basketball team said on Wednesday it had been forced to withdraw from next season’s Eurocup due to problems with its arena.
Krasnye Krylya won its first European trophy in last season’s third-tier Eurochallenge, earning it entry into the second-tier Eurocup for next season.
“Competing in the Eurocup would cause many difficulties,” club president Vladislav Kapustin said on the Krasnye Krylya website. “From the perspective of the club’s future development, at the moment it is more expedient to decline participation.”
The main problem is that the club’s MTL Arena is not suitable to host Eurocup games, while the larger, nearby Lada Arena is still under construction, he added.
Krasnye Krylya said in a club statement it would compete in the Eurochallenge and the Eastern European VTB United League in 2013-14.
