NALCHIK, June 8 (RIA Novosti) - Unknown suspects killed a policeman near his house in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, a spokesman for the republic’s Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

He said a lieutenant from the Baksansky district police department was off-duty and at his house on Friday night, when unknown people called him out on the street and then opened fire on him.

“The policeman died at the crime scene from the gun wounds he sustained,” the spokesman added.

Investigators are working to establish the motives for the crime, while policemen are searching for the assailants.

The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
