BEIRUT / MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - A rocket was fired towards Israel from the territory of southern Lebanon early on Monday, the Al Mayadeen satellite TV said.

The channel gave no further details, saying only that the projectile was fired from the outskirts of Marjayoun, a city about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Israeli border.

The Israeli military said they were investigating reports of an explosion from residents of the northern Israeli town of Metula, Reuters reported.

"An explosion was heard. Soldiers are searching the area. The cause is still being investigated," Reuters quoted a military spokesman as saying.

Another Israeli military source told the agency it was probably a mortar.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible.

The reports come as tensions in the region intensify over Syria's civil war. Rockets were also fired into a Shiite district of southern Beirut on Sunday, a day after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah pledged his group would fight in Syria until victory for President Bashar al-Assad.
