WASHINGTON, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - At least 26 people were killed by a devastating tornado in Oklahoma last week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Sunday.

The agency said 26 people were officially listed as dead and 387 were injured. A total of 1,150 buildings were destroyed.

The tornado swept through the town of Moore and the surrounding area on Monday afternoon, cutting a path of destruction up to two miles (three km) wide and 22 miles (32 km) long that turned homes and buildings into piles of tangled debris, including two elementary schools.

The official death toll previously stood at 24. In the immediate chaos of the storm officials said the death toll was at least 51, but on Tuesday they said some victims were counted twice and downed communication lines made it difficult to share information.

US President Obama, who toured Oklahoma on Sunday, said $3.4 million in compensation payments had already been approved and 4,200 people had applied for post-disaster assistance.
