MOSCOW, May 2 (RIA Novosti) - Dozens of people have been killed in a gold mine collapse in Sudan this week, media reports citing state officials said on Thursday

"The number of people who died is more than 60," Haroun al-Hassan, the local commissioner in Jebel Amir, North Darfur, said on Thursday, according to AFP. He added that rescue operations were still taking place.

The mine collapse took place back on Monday, but was first reported by the officials only on Thursday.

Rescuers have to use traditional tools to try to reach the victims, because the machines might cause even bigger collapse, Hassan was quoted as saying.

Gold has become a key commodity for Sudan after South Sudan separated two years ago causing the loss of about 75 percent of the country's oil production.
