A former army unit commander in south Russia’s Rostov Region was given a three-year prison sentence for beating his subordinates, extortion, and misappropriation of property, the Investigative Committee said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - A former army unit commander in south Russia’s Rostov Region was given a three-year prison sentence for beating his subordinates, extortion, and misappropriation of property, the Investigative Committee said on Wednesday.

A military court found that in July 2011 Lt. Denis Ivanov beat three conscripts for allegedly failing to perform their duties properly and soon after that took a bribe of 60,000 rubles (around $2,000) for granting a sergeant exemption from his daily duties for more than a month.

Between July and September 2011 Ivanov accepted a total of over 70,000 rubles in bribes from 41 servicemen for giving them preferential treatment. In addition, he appropriated more than 23,000 rubles by withholding cash allowances due to his subordinates, the committee said.

The court also stripped Ivanov of his rank and fined him 3 million rubles.
