MOSCOW, April 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is concerned by the ongoing hunger strike of inmates in the Guantanamo prison, the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative for human rights said in a statement on Monday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry's Special Representative for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Konstantin Dolgov said the hunger strike was caused by poor incarceration conditions, which are below international standards.

Tensions escalated on Saturday, when prison guards fired less-than-lethal rounds in a clash with detainees wielding "improvised weapons."

“Those events cause serious concern in Moscow, especially taking into account that Russian national R. K. Mingazov has been kept in this prison for more than a decade, without a trial or investigation,” Dolgov said.

Ravil Mingazov, a citizen of Russia, was arrested in Pakistan in 2002. No official charges have been officially filed against him so far.

The Russian official reiterated Moscow’s call to the US authorities “to finally take effective measures so that the prison was closed as soon as possible, in accordance with numerous recommendations by international human rights bodies.”
