General Motors said on Thursday it is recalling 145,628 pickup trucks sold mostly in the United States due to a possible missing latch that could cause the vehicle’s hood to fly open unexpectedly.

WASHINGTON, December 20 (RIA Novosti) – General Motors said on Thursday it is recalling 145,628 pickup trucks sold mostly in the United States due to a possible missing latch that could cause the vehicle’s hood to fly open unexpectedly.

“The hood may be missing the secondary hood latch,” the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated in a report about the recall that affects Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize vehicles manufactured from November 9, 2009 through August 28, 2012.

If the primary latch is not engaged on the vehicles than the hood could fly open and obstruct the driver’s view thus increasing the risk of a crash, according to the NHTSA.

GM said that it doesn’t know of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem, and discovered the issue after a parts supplier reported four trucks were missing the secondary latches, the Associated Press reported.

The recall includes 118,800 trucks in the United States, 15,264 in Canada, 7,492 in Mexico and the rest in other countries.

GM will issue recall notifications in the mail to owners instructing them to have their trucks inspected for the presence of a secondary hood latch, and dealers will replace the hood free of charge on any affected vehicles, the NHTSA stated.

The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013.
