MOSCOW, December 17 (R-Sport) – Russia's gymnastics team is targeting six medals including two golds at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, head coach Andrei Rodionenko told R-Sport on Monday.

Russia scored eight gymnastics medals in London but only one gold, trailing China with four gold and the United States with three.

“The task for this Olympic cycle hasn’t changed from the previous one: two gold, two silver and two bronze medals,” Rodionenko said. “This is the limit of our abilities in the situation that is developing in the world.”

According to Rodionenko, gymnastics is developing rapidly in the whole world and athletes from 16-20 countries are fighting for the Olympic medals.

Aliya Mustafina won Russia's only gymnastics gold in London with her routine on the uneven bars. It was her country's first Olympic gold in the sport since Sydney 2000.

In 2016, Brazil will host the first Olympic Games to be held in South America.

Rodionenko earlier urged Russian authorities to build a training facility in the southern city of Sochi so athletes can prepare for Rio in a similar climate.
