MOSCOW, December 15 (RIA Novosti) – A daring attack on an airport in the Pakistani city of Peshawar left at least four dead from heavy gun- and rocket fire on Saturday, regional media reported.

Several rockets hit the Bacha Khan International Airport and the nearby University Town area, Pakistani television Geo said.

The attackers then started a gun battle with airport security forces, Indian news website Dnaindia.com said. The airport was sealed off, it added.

At least four people were killed and 30 injured in the fighting, Times of India said. Most of the casualties were civilians, including women and children, Dnaindia.com said.

The assault came from the tribal area on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, reports said. Much of the zone is controlled by the radical Taliban movement, which was behind a similar attack on the airport of the Pakistani city Jalalabad in August, when five Taliban fighters and five security troops were killed.

Peshawar has a population of 3.6 million and is located in the country’s northwest.
