MOSCOW, December 1 (RIA Novosti) - Internet and telephone service were being restored in Syria on Saturday after a two-day blackout, news reports said.

Internet service has been restored in Damascus and partly in its neighborhood, AFP reported. Renesys, a US-based web monitoring firm, confirmed in a statement Saturday that its data shows “a largely complete restoration of the Syrian Internet”.

The communications blackout started Thursday. The authorities and opposition rebels have been blaming each other for cutting the service.

Meanwhile, SANA news agency reported that a car bomb exploded near Damascus. It wasn't immediately clear if anyone was hurt in the attack.

Some 40,000 people have been reported killed since an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011, according to UN and activist estimates.
