MOSCOW, November 28 (RIA Novosti) – Investigators in Astrakhan opened a criminal case on Wednesday against a police officer who they say padded his arrest statistics by forcing a man to write up 50 false police reports along with a confession, the local Investigative Committee said.

The police captain threatened a local man with violence unless he falsely confessed to a crime against his neighbor, investigators said, adding that the officer was acting in “his own personal interests.”

A criminal case was then opened against the victim, dubbed “citizen S.,” but was quickly dropped by prosecutors after he filed a complaint against the officer.

The officer faces seven years in prison if convicted of abuse of power.
