MOSCOW, November 24 (R-Sport) – Puerto Rican boxer Hector Camacho has died of gunshot wounds after being taken off life support, local newspaper El Nuevo Dia reported Saturday.

Three-time world champion Camacho was shot in the face in his hometown of Bayamon on Tuesday night while sitting in a car in a parking lot. The bullet fractured some of his cervical vertebrae and damaged the carotid artery, which affected his brain’s blood supply.

The 50-year-old was pronounced brain dead on Thursday and placed on life support before suffering two cardiac arrests. He was disconnected after the second one in the early hours of Saturday, the newspaper said.

Camacho was the WBC super featherweight champion, WBC lightweight champion and WBO light welterweight champion, and racked up 38 knockout wins with an overall record of 79-6-3.

Some reports Friday said that his mother Maria Matias admitted that "God has taken him," but wanted to wait for the arrival of Camacho's children to Puerto Rico before taking him off life support.

A doctor at the clinic said that Camacho’s organs couldn’t be donated because too much time had elapsed since his brain ceased functioning, the newspaper said.
