MOSCOW, November 17 (R-Sport) - The Russian pair of Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov won the pairs event at figure skating's Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris on Saturday.

Kavaguti and Smirnov won with a score of 187.99 points to book their place at the Grand Prix Finals and win their fifth Grand Prix together, edging out Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford by 1.28 points.

Duhamel and Radford scored highest in the free skate, beating Kavaguti and Smirnov into second place by 3.22 points, but it was not enough to make up the Russians’ advantage from Friday’s short program.

A second Grand Prix silver for the Canadians this season sees them also qualify for the finals.

Third place went to the Italian pair of Stefania Berton and Ondej Hotarek, who were fourth in the short program and fifth in the free skate, but consistent enough to rack up for their second bronze of the season.

China’s Cheng Peng and Hao Zhang had been third after the short program, but their free skate score of 107.84 put them out of contention in sixth place, while Russia’s Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov were third in the free skate but lost out to the Italians by 2.56 points.

The Trophee Eric Bompard is the penultimate of six Grand Prix events on the circuit. The finals are in Sochi on December 6-9.
