MOSCOW, November 9 (R-Sport) - Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan is in the lead after the short program at the Cup of Russia men's singles in Moscow on Friday.

World champion Chan, 21, came first with a score of 85.44 points, ahead of Russia’s Konstantin Menshov in second on 76.73 points, with Japanese skater Takahiko Kozuka 0.39 points further back.

“It was very difficult for me today,” Menshov said.

“After making all the jumps, I’ve started thinking about how hard it will be tomorrow. Tomorrow, I’ll have to spend even more time on ice and it scares me.”

Two other Russians, Zhan Bush and Artur Gachinski, were fourth and fifth respectively, while Canada's Johnny Weir found himself stuck in 10th and last after falling on his quad toe loop on his return to the Grand Prix circuit.

"I'm so upset and embarassed that I performed this way for the Russian public because they know everything about the sport, they know everything about me and what I believe in and what I want to do on the ice," Weir said after scoring 57.47.

"I wanted so much to skate well here but I couldn't do it today."

The free skate takes place Saturday.

The Cup of Russia is the fourth stage of the 2012-13 Grand Prix.
