WASHINGTON, November 8 (RIA Novosti) - US surgeons successfully separated 8-month-old twin girls joined together at the lower chest and abdomen and expect the infants will now be able to live full, healthy and independent lives.

“Like all separations of conjoined twins, this was a very complex surgery, but it went very well and as expected,” said lead surgeon Dr. Holly Hedrick, one of the 40 physicians, nurses and medical staff at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) who worked for about seven hours on Wednesday to separate Allison and Amelia Tucker.

The twins from Adams, New York, shared a chest wall, diaphragm, pericardium and liver, and are recovering in the hospital’s newborn/infant intensive care unit and will be monitored closely as they recuperate in the coming months, Hedrick said.

Doctors spent months planning and preparing the girls for surgery.

“This has been one of the most incredible journeys for our family, but we are excited about the next phase in Allison’s and Amelia’s lives,” said the girls’ mother Shellie Tucker.

Hospital officials said the surgery was the 21st successful separation of conjoined twins performed at CHOP.

Conjoined twins occur once in every 50,000 to 60,000 births and most are stillborn.
