Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's plane was forced to land in St. Petersburg instead of its destination of Moscow on Tuesday evening because of severe weather conditions in the country's capital, his press secretary, Natalya Timakova, said.

Moscow was hit with freezing rain during the afternoon on Tuesday.

"While [the premier's plane] was descending to land, it was decided to land at a different airport because of poor weather conditions," she said, adding: "The premier's plane landed safely in St. Petersburg."

Medvedev was returning from a one-day working visit to the city of Perm.

Throughout the day the capital's three airports reported that flights were undisturbed by the weather and were operating according to schedule.
