India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday appointed former Law Minister Salman Khurshid as a new Foreign Minister, Indian News Agency IANS reported.

Salman Khurshid, 59, replaced SM Krishna who resigned on October 26. According to the Indian press, Krishna, who headed the foreign ministry since May 2009, decided to resign as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh considered his work not very successful.

On Sunday Manmohan Singh named a new cabinet in the biggest ministerial reshuffle ahead of state and national elections scheduled for 2014.

Contrary to expectations, the heir to a political dynasty of Nehru-Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, 42, did not join the new government. According to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi intends to focus on the job in the ruling party Indian National Congress, where he holds the post of General Secretary.
