Four teenagers were injured on Sunday when a World War II landmine blew up in Russia's Volgograd Region, the police said.

"According to initial information, four teenagers were hurt when the wartime mine blew up near the village of Sirotinskaya in the Ilovlinsky District. Two of them are in a serious condition," police spokeswoman Svetlana Smolyaninova said.

The teenagers found the mine not far from the village "and started to play with it or take it apart," she said.

Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) was the scene of one of the largest battles of the war, and the area was heavily mined by both the Axis and Soviet forces.
