Andrei Arshavin has been left out of Fabio Capello's 24-man Russia squad for the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Israel.

The 31-year-old Arsenal forward has been a mainstay in the national team since 2002, winning 74 caps and scoring 17 goals.

But his work ethic has been called into question after appearing to ask teammates not to pass the ball to him at the recent Euro 2012 tournament. Russia crashed out in the group stage.

Capello also omitted former Tottenham Hotspur striker Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fulham's Pavel Pogrebnyak, opting for just three forwards Spartak Moscow's Artem Dzyuba, Zenit St. Petersburg's Alexander Kerzhakov and Dynamo Moscow's Alexander Kokorin.

There was a recall for Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, who was left out of the Euro 2012 squad.

No foreign-based players were included.

Russia host Northern Ireland at the Lokomotiv Moscow stadium on September 7 and play in Israel four days later.
