Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday demanded “the strictest control” over funds allocated to develop territories recently incorporated into the Russian capital.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday demanded “the strictest control” over funds allocated to develop territories recently incorporated into the Russian capital.

“All funds directed for the development of the new territories should be under the strictest control possible,” the Russian president said.

He also called on the administration of Moscow and the Moscow Region to ensure that the transition process caused “no problems,” “no setbacks and no headaches for residents.”

On July 1, Moscow acquired 150,000 hectares of neighboring territories from its southwest borders following the city’s expansion plan brokered by then-President Dmitry Medvedev in 2011.

Putin said the expansion of the Moscow borders was a “vital necessity.”

The so-called Greater Moscow includes the territory of two cities in the Moscow region, Shcherbinka and Troitsk, as well as 19 smaller residential areas.

Over 232,000 people, who became Muscovites overnight, will reduce the city’s population density from 10,700 people per square kilometer to 4,600 people. The move is also aimed to relieve the city’s center from traffic jams.
