Three people were killed and three others were injured after a gunman opened fire near the Texas A&M campus on Monday, U.S. media reported.

The suspected shooter and a police officer were among the dead, the LA Times said citing police authorities in College Station, Texas.

Some reports said police arrived at suspected shooter's address a few blocks from the college campus to serve an eviction notice, while others suggest that law enforcement officers responded to a report of a man with a gun.

The gunman opened fire on the officers when they arrived at his home.

A third person, a male civilian, was also killed while a female civilian was shot and injured, and two other police officers were also injured with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The authorities have yet to establish a motive for what they called a "sensless attack."

The Texas shooting comes in a wake of a recent spark of gun violence in the United States.

In July, a 24-year-old man wearing a gas mask opened fire in a crowded Colorado movie theater at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie
killing 12 people and wounding 58 others. The gunmen was taken into custody.

On August 5, an assailant opened fire in a Sikh temple in the town of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, killing six parishioners before turning his gun on himself.
