South Korea won their first Olympic medal in men’s football after beating Japan in 2-0 in the bronze medal match Friday.

The Korean players scored one goal in each half to grab a historic victory 2-0 with goals from Arsenal's Park Chuyoung and Wolfsburg's Koo Jacheol.

Park scored just before half time, beating two defenders before tucking the ball inside the near post to give the Koreans the lead.

The second came in Route One style when Koo picked up a headed pass off a goal kick, controlled the ball and struck it past Shuichi Gonda.

Japan captain Yoshida Maya bundled the ball into the net from a corner, but it was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper, while Hiroki Sakai had a good chance to score with a header on 37 minutes, but missed.

Blood was spilled late in the first half when Japan’s Takahiro Ohgihara was cautioned for elbowing Park in the face.

Japan's Kazuya Yamamura finished the match with head bandaged after a fierce challenge.

Brazil face Mexico in Saturday’s final at Wembley in search of their first Olympic gold.
