The Netherlands retained women’s hockey gold Friday, beating Argentina 2-0 with goals from penalty corners.

Carlien Dirkse van den Heuvel was the first to strike, scoring on 45 minutes, before Maartje Paumen added the second nine minutes later to further reduce Argentina’s hopes of a surprise first Olympic gold.

The Dutch had more chances, recording seven shots to Argentina’s two, and six penalty corners to their opponents’ two.

The Netherlands retained the Olympic title they won by beating China 2-0 in Beijing four years ago, while the Argentineans suffered their second final defeat after losing the 2000 final in Sydney to Australia 3-1.
