Australia’s women’s water polo team won Olympic bronze Thursday after being made to fight all the way by a dogged Hungarian team that took the match to extra time.

With the score poised at 11-11 after regular time, Australia took control in the six-minute extra time period with two goals from Gemma Beadsworth to win 13-11.

Hungary took the match to extra time with a last-second goal from Dora Antal that capped a second-half surge after the Australians had led 7-4 at half time.

Australia, the 2000 Olympic champion on home ground in Sydney, also won bronze in Beijing four years ago.

Hungary is one of the most dominant countries in the men’s game but the Hungarian women’s team has never won an Olympic medal.
