On August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Watch the RIA Novosti video for a chronicle of the counterattack. On August 6, 1945, Colonel Paul Tibbets, commander of the 509th Composite Group, based on the island of Tinian in the Pacific Ocean, ordered the bomb with the diminutive name “Little Boy” to be loaded into the bay of a B-29 bomber. At 1:45 am the squadron headed for Hiroshima. The flight to the target lasted about six hours.
