The United States stormed to gold in the 4x100 meters medley relay on Saturday, setting a new world record in the process.

The Americans, featuring a team of swimmers who have already claimed golds and world records at these Games, took gold in three minutes, 52.05 seconds.

Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer, Allison Schmitt won it ahead of the Australians, who took silver two seconds back.

"I honestly couldn't think of a better way to end it," said the 17-year-old Franklin, won the 100m backstroke on Monday.

"It was the most fun relay I've ever been on."

Australia's Leisel Jones said the color of the medal didn't matter.

"Our goal was to go out there and have fun which we certainly did. I just wanted them to enjoy themselves, didn't really care what was going to happen."

Japan edged Russia off the podium to claim bronze in 3:55.73 with Aya Terakawa, Satomi Suzuki, Yuka Kato and Haruka Ueda.

Aya Terakawa of Japan said she expected a tight race.

"It is a wonderful achievement," she said of the bronze.
