Britain’s No. 1 Andy Murray secured a straight-sets win over Stanislav Wawrinka of Switzerland in the first round of Olympic tournament on Sunday.

Murray won 6-3, 6-3 under the Center Court roof against an opponent who took him to five sets the last time they met on the Wimbledon grass.

Wawrinka, ranked 26th in the world, tried to get back into the match in the second set, but 19 unforced errors put paid to his efforts as Murray wrapped up the win.

Murray lost the Wimbledon final to Roger Federer at the same venue earlier this month, but said support from British fans had spurred him on for the Olympics.

"The support I got after the final made a huge difference, well, to me, to my confidence, made a difference to my practice after that loss because I wanted to get back on the practice court straightaway, back in the gym, get myself ready for this tournament because I want to do my best," he said.

The Scot’s next opponent will be either India’s Somdev Devvarman or Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen, whose match was delayed due to rain.
