Special services have killed three militants in a clash in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, a law enforcement source said.

“A few bandits were blocked in Ordzhonikidzevskaya village. When told to surrender, they opened fire,” the source said, adding that the attackers were killed by return fire.

The militants were suspected of blowing up shops and attempting to kill law enforcers, he said.

No law enforcement officer was killed or injured.

The Russian authorities have moved to improve the poor economic conditions in the North Caucasus republics and curb unemployment, which are considered to be the main factors driving local residents to join militant groups.

The North Caucasus sees frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and government officials as Moscow continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there.
