Traffic police from Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk Region have published several online sketches of a proposed sign that elderly drivers could put on their cars, Komsomolskaya Pravda in Ukraine paper said on Thursday.

A contest to choose an the best image for the sign kicked off this June. The initiative was proposed by Mykola Boychenko, a 60-year-old driver from Dnepropetrovsk.

The region’s traffic police approved his idea. “The issue [of elderly drivers] is quite sensitive. Statistic shows that they rarely get involved in traffic accidents, but frequently face the disrespectful attitude of young drivers whom they ‘hinder,’” Volodymir Lebedev, head of the regional traffic police service told the paper.

The sketches published on the website of the traffic police service include images depicting a walking stick, a man with walking stick, a car against the background of the sun, a turtle, an owl, a rocking chair, a dandelion and others.

The contest is continuing. The traffic service has emphasized that the sign “must be easily understandable, laconic and not insulting to elderly drivers.”

Later, the region’s traffic police could apply to deputies and ask them to give official status to the new sign.
