Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that a civil war could break out in the country if he loses presidential elections in October, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

"If a right-wing' presidential candidate takes office, it would mean an end to the social reforms, which were carried out during 14 years of my rule, and spark a civil war in the country," Chavez said.

The presidential campaign kicked off in Venezuela on July 1. Chavez, who underwent three cancer operations in Cuba over the last year, is seeking reelection for a third six-year term.

According to recent public polls, Chavez has more chances to win the October 7 election than his main rival, opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.
