The Moldovan Parliament on Thursday passed amendments prohibiting political parties from using symbols introduced by totalitarian regimes, especially the hammer and sickle logo.

Out of the 101 parliamentary deputies, 53 voted for it. The opposition communist fraction voted against the document.

Deputies from the parliamentary majority also adopted a decree “on the historical, political and legal evaluation of the totalitarian communist regime in the Moldovan Republic,” condemning “crimes against humanity as well as the actions of all those people who took part in these crimes.”

The Communist Party, whose flag features a hammer and a sickle, won most seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections. The party ruled Moldova for nearly ten years between 2001 and 2009. Prior to that Moldova was a Soviet state.
