Russia’s top player Mikhail Youzhny blasted past Spain’s Inigo Cervantes into the third round at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Youzhny, 26th seed, put in an assured display to oust the 22-year-old 6-1, 6-3, 6-4.

In the next round Youzhny, who is yet to venture past round four, will face eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic, who defeated Ryan Sweeting of the United States 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.

Elsewhere, third seed Roger Federer demolished Fabio Fognini to steam into the third round.

It took the six-time champion a little more than an hour to dispatch the 68th-ranked Italian 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Next up for Federer is either qualifier Michael Russell of the United States or 29th seed Julien Benneteau of France.

Argentina's Juan Monaco dug deep for a four-set win over Jeremy Chardy of France.

Chardy lost the first set but recovered with a strong serve to take the second, Monaco coming back to snatch victory on a tie-break in the fourth 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

In the third round Monaco comes up against either world No. 34 Viktor Troicki of Serbia or Slovakia's Martin Klizan.

Spain’s David Ferrer, who beat Andy Murray in the French Open quarterfinals, dumped German Qualifier Dustin Brown out in the first round 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4.

Ferrer plays French qualifier Kenny de Schepper in round two.

Roland Garros champion Maria Sharapova couldn’t finish her second-round match against Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria due to bad light.

In the first set Pironkova, ranked 38 in the world, gave first seed Sharapova an early scare by rushing to a 5-2 lead, but Sharapova fought off five set points to win a tie-break 7-3.

Sharapova led 3-1 in the second set when the referee decided to stop the match.
