Venezuela has recalled its ambassador to Paraguay and suspended oil export to protest the impeachment of Paraguay’s President Fernando Lugo, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said.

“We recall the ambassador and cut off oil shipments,” Telesur TV channel reported quoting Chavez as saying.

Chavez described Lugo’s impeachment as a coup organized by the bourgeoisie. “These are the bourgeoisie who used to trample their people,” Chavez said.

Paraguay's Congress voted overwhelmingly on Friday to remove Lugo from office over last week’s deadly clashes between farmers and police officers that left 17 people dead.

Vice President Federico Franco was sworn in on Friday to replace Lugo until presidential elections scheduled for April 2013.

Venezuela joined Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Ecuador and Chile, which withdrew heads of their diplomatic missions in Asuncion. Brazil, Uruguay and Chili recalled their ambassadors for consultations while Argentina, Ecuador and Venezuela ordered their envoys to return home in protest.
