Russia's unemployment rate calculated under International Labor Organization methodology fell by seven percent on the previous month in May 2012, to 4.093 million people or 5.4 percent of the country's active population, a four-year low, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) said on Wednesday.

"In May 2012, nearly 4.1 million people or 5.4 percent of the country's active population were classified as unemployed," Rosstat said in a statement.

Russia's economically active population stood at 76.2 million people in May 2012 or over 53 percent of the country's total population, the service added.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said that the new government would focus on measures to fight the unemployment as well as inflation and poverty.

"The poverty rate is still too high across the country and, secondly, there are regions where the unemployment level is higher the national average. Thirdly, families with children most frequently fall into the poverty category, even though they deserve this least of all," he said.
