Italy must repeat their battling performance against Spain if they are to beat Croatia in their Euro 2012 clash Thursday, midfielder Christian Maggio has said.

Croatia can secure a place in the quarterfinals with a win over Italy, after beating Ireland 3-1 in their group stage opener on Sunday.

Italy showed defensive resilience in their 1-1 draw with Spain, and a win over Croatia would end a winless run stretching back to August.

"We know we are up against a very solid team," Maggio said on the UEFA website.

"We have watched some clips and they are a team who can cause problems at any time, especially up front, but I'm convinced that if we play like we did against Spain, they'll be in trouble."

Italy's tactical system "worked very well and yielded benefits" against Spain, Maggio said, adding that it coach Cesare Prandelli may shake things up ahead of the "crucial" Croatia game.

Napoli player Maggio has 13 caps for Italy and has yet to score for his country.

In Thursday's other game, Spain can end Ireland's Euro 2012 dream by inflicting defeat on Giovanni Trappatoni's side.
