Six people died early on Monday in a fire in the northwestern Russian city of St. Petersburg, an emergencies services official said.
“A fire occurred in a three-room apartment on the fifth floor of a building on Kondratyevsky Avenue. The apartment burned down,” the official said, adding that the building was vacant.
He said five people died on the site and a sixth one tried to escape through a window but failed to survive the fall.
“Relevant services are finding out why people were inside the building. Their identities are being established,” the official said.
