Paul Lambert has been appointed Aston Villa's new coach, taking over from Alex McLeish, who was fired at the end of the season.

The 42-year-old Scot turned down a contract extension at Norwich City to move to the Birmingham club, who finished just two points above the relegation zone.

"The board of Aston Villa are delighted to confirm that Paul Lambert has been appointed Villa manager," a club statement said Saturday.

McLeish, who was derided by some sections of the Villa faithful after joining from city rivals Birmingham, took the club to just seven wins in 38 league games.

Lambert led Norwich to a creditable 12th place this season, just a year after winning promotion to the top flight.

He resigned earlier this week.

On Thursday, Norwich said they had "fought hard to keep Paul at Norwich City and have not accepted his resignation whilst discussions with another club are taking place."
