Russian Formula One driver Vitaly Petrov was left disappointed after a first-corner collision and electrical problems stopped him taking advantage of a strong start to the Monaco Grand Prix, he said Sunday.

Caterham driver Petrov overtook several cars at the start but was hit by Kamui Kobayashi at the first corner after the Sauber driver was caught up in a multi-car pile-up and hurtled across the track.

This forced him into the pits for a new nose cone, before electrical failure ended the Russian’s race on lap 16.

“I made a good start and passed a few cars but then a Sauber came right across me and hit me as we were going into turn one,” Petrov said in comments on the Caterham website.

“It's a real shame as I was in a strong position after my good start and as the car has felt good all weekend I would have been in with a chance of finishing really well, but these things happen in motor racing.”

Petrov’s teammate Heikki Kovalainen recorded the team’s best finish of the season in 13th to lift Caterham to 10th in the constructors’ championship, ahead of Marussia, which is part-owned by Russian TV presenter and car manufacturer Nikolai Fomenko.

Kovalainen was forced to pit for a new nosecone near the end of the race, and the Marussia team are disappointed at their failure to take advantage of the Finn’s setback, Marussia team principal John Booth said.

“This has been a disappointing race all round for us in terms of how it concluded,” Booth said in comments on the Marussia website.

“Despite Kovalainen’s front wing change, the problems on both our cars meant that he was able to retain 13th position, which means we have slipped back from 10th place in the Championship.”

Petrov is ranked 23rd of 24 drivers in the championship after six races in which he has failed to finish higher than 16th, with Kovalainen up to 19th after Monaco thanks to his 13th place.

Marussia’s Timo Glock and Charles Pic are 20th and 21st respectively in the drivers’ championship.
