Britain pushed Russia into second place in the men’s team all-around event at the European gymnastics championships to take gold in Montpellier, France, on Sunday.
It was the first gold in the event for Britain, which won with a score of 266.296, just 0.7 points ahead of Russia, with Romania third on 261.319 points, while heavily-fancied France and Germany failed to make an impression.
Britain started slowly as Russia took the lead, before seizing first place when Russia’s Anton Golotstutskov fell on the high bar.
Russia has not won a medal in the men’s team all-around since a bronze in Sydney in 2000. China won all but one of the eight men’s gymnastics gold medals in Beijing in 2008, including the team all-around.
