Ekaterina Makarova upset Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the first round of the $2 million Rome Open on Monday.

The Russian world No. 38 breezed past the world No. 11 in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in just under an hour 20 minutes at the tournament, a key French Open warm-up event.

Makarova took all four of her break points, with Schiavone converting just one of two.

The Russian faces Venus Williams or Simona Halep of Romania in round two.

Earlier Monday, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova cruised past Kazakhstan's Ksenia Pervak 6-2, 6-4 to set up a second round against Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

But Svetlana Kuznetsova lost 6-4, 6-3 to Serbia's Ana Ivanovic.
