Ana Ivanovic dumped Nadia Petrova out of the $5.2 million Madrid Open at the second-round stage on Tuesday.

The Russian, ranked 31, was beaten 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 18 minutes, Ivanovic's eighth career defeat of Petrova.

The 13th-ranked Serbian meets world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in round three.

Petrova had stormed back from a set down to beat American Vania King 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in round one on Sunday.

Earlier Tuesday, Maria Sharapova breezed into the third round, ousting the Czech Republic's Klara Zakopalova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Next up for Sharapova, who demolished Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, is Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro or another Czech in world No. 23 Lucie Safarova.

The Madrid Open is being played on blue clay that has attracted criticism from some players as acting differently to the traditional orange surfaces.
