Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady has been called up to the Ireland squad for Euro 2012, Ireland coach Giovanni Trappattoni said Monday.

This will be the first time that the 26-year-old McGeady has played in a major international tournament, as Ireland has not qualified for one since the 2002 World Cup.

The squad also boasts former Tottenham Hostpur striker Robbie Keane, Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given and Sunderland midfielder James McClean. One notable absentee is Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy, who withdrew from selection after his father was diagnosed with cancer.

Despite being born in Glasgow, Scotland, McGeady elected to represent Ireland, for which he qualifies through his grandparets. He has scored two goals in 47 international appearances.

McGeady joined Spartak from Scottish side Celtic in August 2010 and has since scored five goals in 40 appearances for the Russian club.
