Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has nominated the current president of Buryatia, Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn, for another term as head of the Siberian republic, the Kremlin press service reported on Saturday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has nominated the current president of Buryatia, Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn, for another term as head of the Siberian republic, the Kremlin press service reported on Saturday.

The ruling United Russia party on Friday submitted to Medvedev the names of three candidates for the post, including Nagovitsyn, the deputy chairman of the government Pyotr Noskov and the CEO of Ikat-Plus Bato Ochirov.

Nagovitsyn has been the president of Buryatia since July 2007.

Medvedev also submitted his nomination for governor of Leningrad region: deputy governor and chairman of the regional State Property Management Committee Alexander Drozdenko.

The day before United Russia nominated three candidates for the post: Drozdenko; Andrey Molchanov, a senator in the Federation Council; and Alexander Khudilainen, chairman of the Legislative Assembly.

The list did not include the present day head of the region, Valery Serdyukov, whose current term expires in July.

A new law that replaces the current system of presidential appointment of governors with direct elections enters force on June 1.

Medvedev steps down as president on May 7, when his successor, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, will be sworn in for a six-year presidential term.
