The Russian emergencies ministry’s plane landed late on Wednesday in the Libyan capital Tripoli to deliver humanitarian aid, a ministry spokesman said.

"At 23:10 Moscow time an Il-76 plane carrying 15 metric tons of humanitarian cargo landed in the Libyan capital Tripoli,” the source said.

The cargo consists mainly of medical equipment and medicines.

A popular uprising against the rule of Muammar Gaddafi which evolved into armed clashes between his opponents and supporters, followed by NATO-led airstrikes, have put the country on the verge of a full-scale humanitarian crisis.

In late October Russia pledged to provide Libya with humanitarian aid worth $7 million via international organizations.

The head of the UN's humanitarian mission in Libya, Panos Moumtzis, said last year the ruling Transitional National Council had informed the UN that they could cope with the country's humanitarian problems without outside assistance.
