Azerbaijan’s National Security Ministry officers have conducted special operations across the country to detain 17 suspected members of an illegal armed group that planned subversive activities, the ministry reported on Friday.

The operations were conducted in the cities of Baku, Ganja, Sumgait, and several districts of the South Caucasus country.

The sweep netted assault rifles, a machine-gun, handguns, ammunition and plastic explosives, radios as well as extremist literature.

Earlier on Friday, the Trend.az website reported, citing law enforcement agencies, that during the operation in the northwest city of Ganja, one law enforcement officer was killed and three wounded in an armed clash with members of an illegal armed group.

One militant was killed and two were wounded in the clash that was the result of an operation to eliminate a militant group, city police said.

The Turan news agency reported that the operation was against a group of adherents to the Wahhabi branch of Islam, one of whom apparently blew himself up.

An investigation is underway.
