Several leading English Premier League clubs want to sign Zenit St. Petersburg defender Tomas Hubocan, former Zenit sporting director Konstantin Sarsania said Thursday.

Hubocan has played 24 times for Zenit this season as the St. Petersburg side charged to the top of the Russian Premier League table, and features regularly in international games for Slovakia.

“Several English clubs are interested in him. I can’t give you their names, but they’re all in the top half of the table,” Sarsania told Russian magazine Sport Weekend.

Hubocan is attractive to foreign clubs because he is a versatile all-rounder, Sarsania said.

“Most of all, he’s strong in defensive skills. He’s tall, can play tough, use his body and, of course, pick out a pass,” he said.

“Tomas’ real significance lies in the fact that he can play in any position in defense.”

Hubocan joined Zenit in 2008 and has steadily cemented a place in the first team, winning the Russian domestic double in 2010 with the St. Petersburg club, and has picked up 15 caps for Slovakia since 2006.

Sarsania was Zenit’s sporting director between 2006 and 2009, and held a variety of backroom posts with Dynamo Moscow and the Russian Football Union before joining second-tier Fakel Voronezh in 2010 as head coach.
