Police in Russia’s Smolensk region have found an arms cache in a 72-year-old retiree’s shed who said she kept them in memory of her late son, a local gangster, regional police said on Wednesday.

“The shed’s owner said that she kept the arms in memory of her son and did not know it was forbidden by the law,” police said in a statement.

The police found the cache after the elderly lady reported that she had been robbed late at night. The policemen who came to search the house found an arms stash in the shed.

According to the police statement, the lady kept a gun with a fully loaded clip, a hunting rifle, 348 rounds for TT pistol, 74 rounds for Kalashnikov assault rifle and over 100 rounds for a Saiga carbine.

The pensioner, who has been charged with the possession of illegal firearms, may face up to three years in jail if found guilty.
