Russia face Canada in the quarterfinals of rugby's Hong Kong Sevens qualifier tournament after a win and a defeat on Saturday left them runners-up in Pool F.
The Bears recovered from a 12-0 half-time deficit to beat debutants Guyana 14-12 early Saturday, but lost their second game of the day, and the pool's top spot, to Portugal with a 17-10 defeat.
Russia started their campaign on Friday with a 15-7 victory over Japan.
The Canadians beat the Philippines and Spain to qualify, but lost to Zimbabwe to take second place in their pool.
If Russia beat Canada on Sunday, they will face the winner of Portugal’s quarterfinal with Zimbabwe.
The other quarterfinal games see Japan take on Hong Kong, with Portugal one of only two unbeaten teams in the second-tier competition, while Spain face Tonga.
The top three teams in the qualifier tournament will win places on the World Series sevens tour for next season.
If they fail to qualify Russia’s only top-tier sevens event next season will be the World Cup in Moscow next year.
The pool stages in the main tournament are yet to finish. England have a chance to qualify unbeaten with victory over Samoa on Saturday.
