The foreign ministers of the 27-member European Union on Friday approved broadened sanctions against Iran, a source with the EU press service said.

The ministers added 17 Iranians responsible for alleged abuses to a blacklist of 61 people already facing an EU travel ban and assets freeze, the source said.

They also imposed a ban on exports to Iran of equipment that could be used for electronic surveillance, he added.

Western nations have been putting pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, accusing the Islamic republic of developing atomic weapons. Tehran has always strongly denied this, saying the program is for energy purposes only.

The sanctions will come in force after March 24, he said.
